Definiteness and Eventive Nominals

چکیده
This paper discusses the interpretation of complex noun phrases. More specifically, it investigates the type of object that a noun phrase 1 denotes. It has been recognized for some time that noun phrases must be able to denote individuals in some circumstances, events in other cases, propositions in still others (Zucchi 1993, Peterson 1997). I will show that, on the one hand, there are various strategies by which different types of interpretation for noun phrases arise, and on the other hand, the choice of these different strategies is highly dependent on the internal structure of the noun phrases themselves, including in particular its argument structure and its definiteness. This paper proceeds as follows. In section 2 I will discuss the concept of coercion of noun phrases into propositions for interpretation. In section 3 I will introduce the event-nominal exception to definiteness in implicit conditionals, and give my proposal for what causes this exception. In section 4 I will modify the proposal to account for further distributional differences. Section 5 discusses indefinites and a refutation of an alternative explanation for the exceptional behavior of event nominals, while section 6 discusses an outstanding problem for the account. Section 7 gives a brief conclusion.

On agentive and instrumental deverbal nominalizations in Slovenian
This paper presents an analysis of Slovenian deverbal external argument nominalizations in a syntactic approach, where the focus is on Slovenian agentive and instrumental deverbal nominalizations in -(V)lec, the most numerous and productive class in the language according to Stramljič Breznik (1999). It is proposed that these nominals fall in three distinct classes according to the type of the ...
متن کاملCrowdsourcing for the identification of event nominals: an experiment
This paper presents the design and results of a crowdsourcing experiment on the recognition of Italian event nominals. The aim of the experiment was to assess the feasibility of crowdsourcing methods for a complex semantic task such as distinguishing the eventive interpretation of polysemous nominals taking into consideration various types of syntagmatic cues. Details on the theoretical backgro...
متن کاملOn the syntax of episodic vs . dispositional -
In this paper, we are concerned with the semantic and morphosyntactic properties of -er nominalizations in English. Our main contribution to the theoretical discussion on these nominals is that we should distinguish between two groups of -er nominals: those that obey the external argument generalization, irrespectively of whether they are eventive or not, and whether they have complements or no...
متن کاملAn HPSG Account of Danish Pre-nominals
This article addresses the issue of selection restrictions for noun phrase specifiers. Danish data is presented which shows that definiteness plays an important role in this respect. It is pointed out that an analysis is required in which the specifier, when present, leaves a mark on the projected phrase. This is achieved by assuming that specifiers are syntactic heads of noun phrase constructi...
